FIVE years  to educate groups of pregnant women with Daily Essentials. Childbirth Educator Lorenza Holt of Boston Area Childbirth Education called Daily Essentials, “The exercise routine for women who birth in the car,” after one of her students had so little pain she waited a bit too long to go to the hospital! Do you think that is possible again?” Well, I hope women get to a safer birth place than the roadside, but I’m thrilled births are becoming easier!

Protect your license and your students. At each event:

  • Post the printed notice that you have the right to show Daily Essentials
  • Follow safety rules and common sense
  • Concur with the stretches and information presented in the video and do not change the material

Daily Essentials is appropriate for women at all stages of pregnancy. Allow women to adapt the poses to their comfort and ability. Ask women with high blood pressure, risk of stroke, or glaucoma not to do the Forward Leaning Inversion. When started at about 20 weeks of pregnancy, the stories seem to show, birth becomes easier. Easier than what? Easier than giving birth without flexibility and confidence.
Help your community have better births. Begin today.

And I really enjoyed your soothing midwife voice.  :-) Thanks for producing this DVD and for making CEUs available for it! Warm regards," Ronnie Falcao, Midwife, http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/ “Hi,  Gail, I have a client who had two births with shoulder dystocia. Can you please advise me what to do to help her? I noticed that she is very scared to do this again.”   Darling Doula, From your doula point of view, please, listen to her with active listening skills and acknowledge her fear. As you know, active listening doesn’t reassure or seek to quiet the fears, but rather to reflect back what the person identifies as concerns and issues.   Then you can help her reframe herself as empowered to make decisions and courage to go forward. Worry is often a pregnant woman’s message  urging her to prepare to protect herself and her child. After you have acknowledged her list of concerns, you may then want to ask her, What would make her feel safer for her and her child? We must not present any provider or method as a guarantee. Such a mother may feel that she has a fire walk ahead of her. Suggest she talk to her baby and let baby know that a shoulder dystocia is not required on the way out, that this baby can do things differently than the siblings before. But not to talk to the baby from frozen fear. Rather to open the heart to new possibilities and relay that to the baby. For instance, to fold the shoulders close to the chest while moving through the pelvis. She can tell baby that they are in this together on love and support. Create a new focus after the fear is heard and reframed.   She may want to schedule a cesarean section or switch to one in labor. She may want to seek a provider with good spatial skills to help bring her baby out alive and well from this potential shoulder dystocia. She may look for a midwife or doctor with a clear understanding in their hands of what to do for the various ways the shoulder or arm may be stuck or compacted.   I suggest two primary approaches to the next birth:
  1. Expert body work with someone who is very experienced with pregnancy and the sacrum. This is not the typical massage therapist or osteopath or chiropractor, please!
  2. SD experience in the midwife or doctor and an understanding of how the shoulders or arm might be stuck or compacted and how to rotate the baby out or other appropriate ways to release the baby. Having done so a few times is good, but many times is better.
I do believe balancing the pelvis, especially the sacrum and symphysis, and the soft tissues helps make maximum room for the baby and eases the rotation. Some shoulder dystocia occur when the rotation from posterior presentation to anterior presentation is delayed in labor by tight or twisted ligaments, etc. This type of care is more than self care but self care is also crucial for birth ease after challenges such as this one. But a balanced pelvis will only reduce the chance and make it easier for the midwife to resolve the SD if it happens again. There is still a chance and I don’t know how much that chance is actually reduced, if any. My own experience is that balance helps! Grow a “polite-sized” baby. Larger babies have a significantly higher rate of stuck shoulders and can be harder to help out. Most large babies will not have shoulder dystocia!! But when they do, there is less room to slip a hand in and help them out.   So I suggest eating a high percentage of fresh vegetables. Eating 4-6 helpings of protein a day is very important for the mother’s organs to support her pregnancy, but this doesn’t have to be all nut butters, right? In general, eating for her blood type (meats for an “O” and fewer grains whereas an “A” does best on veggie proteins, and The “B” has the choice of all). Moving frequently throughout the day helps regulate ideal weights for her and her baby. Remember, salt-to-taste (add salt if salt has been avoided!) and lots of pure water, a little butter and yoghurt, but less grains, starches, dairy, and fruit than veggies (but not none!) Avoid sugar, refined flours or sugary, starchy and fried foods.   Finally, please, encourage her midwife to purchase and study the Resolving Shoulder Dystocia video. It's excellent for handling a wide variety of ways the shoulders or arm can get stuck. Thank you for hearing this mother’s concerns and being one of the lovely people helping her through this journey. My best hopes for a safe birth.

When Baby Lies Sideways – eBook

When Baby Lies Sideways could help you if:

  • The doctor scheduled a cesarean because your baby is sideways in the womb
  • The doctor offers an external cephalic version to manually turn the baby head down by hand
  • You’re in the third trimester of pregnancy and your baby is not head down, but is lying sideways in a transverse lie, lying diagonally in an oblique lie, or changes into any of these positions frequently in what’s called an unstable lie
  • Your midwife or doctor referred you to Spinning Babies® for information about what you can do that may help your baby find room to move head down
  • You don’t have medical reasons that would contraindicate Forward-leaning Inversion, like bleeding from the placenta, or high blood pressure
  • You want to avoid a cesarean or any other significant intervention in childbirth

Within your body is the physiology of fetal positioning. And within your body is the physiology of self-compassion. This eBook offers a plan of action to be done with compassion. Activating your physiology with a good plan gives you and your baby an excellent chance for a birth with a head-down baby.

We believe you and your baby are together in this adventure of life. One thing is certain: by the end of this program, you will have learned more about yourself that you can apply to life and parenting.

Where is my eBook?
Once purchase is complete, the eBook will be available for download by clicking the button that says, “When Baby Lies Sideways – click to download the PDF.” You can print the eBook only once. You can view it on one device. Do not download it to a device you can’t print from.
